The Yarmouth Red Knights and the Pleasant Valley Lakers are on their way to Burnaby, B.C. this week to defend their respective Over-35 national baseball titles and NovaNewsNow.com is your place for updated results and reports.
The tournament opens Friday, July 30.
Yarmouth opens defence of its 35+ title at 9 a.m. against the Burlington Black 49ers. They play at 2:30 p.m. that same day against the Regina Drifters. The Lakers, meanwhile, open defence of the 50+ title with a game at 2:30 p.m. against the White Rock Legends.
On Saturday, July 30 the Lakers take on the Comox Valley Cubs at 11:30 a.m. and the PoCo Colt 45s at 7 p.m.
The Red Knights play at 2 p.m. against the Tri-City Redhawks and then wrap up round robin play on Sunday, July 31 at 9 a.m. against the Medicine Hat Oilmen. Playoffs continue for the duration of Sunday.
Championship games are scheduled for Monday, Aug. 2. The 50+ tier one title game is at 11:30 a.m. and the 35+ tier one title game is at 2 p.m. All times listed are western standard time.
The Vanguard will be in contact with players from both teams throughout the weekend and will post information and photos on our website as they become available with a full tournament report in the print edition the week after the tournament.
Both Yarmouth and Pleasant Valley captivated area baseball fans young and old alike last year as each marched towards their respective titles in front of hometown crowds. Hundreds of people packed and surround Gateway Park last year for the final game.
In an interview earlier this month, members of both teams said they were feeling good heading into the event. Both teams have added players to their respective rosters from last year that should make them even stronger. _________________ "I'd rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than in any city on earth."

Tack on two more wins for Yarmouth’s teams at the Over 35 national baseball championships.
The defending 50+ champion Pleasant Valley Lakers rebounded from a tournament opening loss to pick up their first win, a 11-1 pounded of the Comox Valley Cubs. The team is scheduled to play again at 11 p.m. Saturday (all times Atlantic standard).
Speaking from Burnaby, B.C., the site of the event, George Purdy of the Lakers said the team is in good shape heading into Saturday night’s game.
“Pretty well the whole team hit and we played well in the field,” he said. “We looked good. I don’t know what happened the first game. Things just snowballed.”
Yarmouth’s other entry at the event, the defending 35 and over champion Red Knights picked up their second win of the tournament, pushing their record to 2-1 thanks to a 12-1 win against the Tri City Red Hawks that was called after five innings.
Jim Gould had a two-run single to break the game open. Hank Purdy started for Yarmouth and Curt Falls and Scott Jeffery pitched in relief.
The Red Knights’ final round robin game is Sunday at 1 p.m.
Rick Clayton of the Red Knights said the team is hitting its stride.
“It’s coming along,” he said. “Everybody started hitting today.”
As is the case with the Lakers tonight, a win tomorrow ensures the Red Knights a spot in the Tier 1 playoffs. And although hopes would remain alive even if they lost, Clayton said they don’t want to leave it to that.
“You’re better off if you win instead of creating a logjam.” _________________ "I'd rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than in any city on earth."

Yarmouth’s two entries at the Over-35 national baseball championships are both eyeing the playoffs heading into the final day of round robin action in Burnaby, B.C.
The Yarmouth Red Knights, the defending over 35 champions, dropped their opening game 6-1 to the Burlington Black 49ers on Friday before rebounding with a 9-7 win against the Regina Drifters on Friday and a 12-1 win against the Tri-City Redhawks on Saturday.
The Red Knights are scheduled to play one more round robin on Sunday at 1 p.m. Atalntic time. A win would guarantee them a spot in the Tier 1 playoffs, while a loss would mean they’d need rely on run differential to get them in.
As for the Pleasant Valley Lakers, the defending 50+ champions, it was an up and down round robin.
The Lakers lost their first game 9-2 on Friday to the White Rock Legends before following that up with an 11-1 pounding of the Comox Valley Cubs on Saturday. Unfortunately for Pleasant Valley, they dropped their final round robin game 7-3 to the PoCo Colt 45s on Saturday, meaning they advance to the Tier 2 playoffs. _________________ "I'd rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than in any city on earth."

The Yarmouth Red Knights are back in the Over 35 baseball national championship title game.
One year after claiming the title on home soil, the Red Knights will play for their second championship in a row today at 6 p.m. (Atlantic time) in Burnaby, B.C. against Cardogan.
Yarmouth reached the final game following a 4-1 win against the Tillsonburg Old Sox, the team Yarmouth beat last year in the championship final.
Duane Doucette, Curt Falls and Scott Jeffery combined to shut down the Old Sox bats. The Red Knights got timely hitting from a number of players including Malcolm Muise, who had a double and single. Defensive star of the game was Paul Jacquard.
Meanwhile the Pleasant Valley Lakers, the defending 50+ national championships, weren't as fortunate. The Lakers, playing in the Tier 2 playoffs, lost to the Saskatoon Sportsmen 6-3 and were elimanted from the tournament. _________________ "I'd rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than in any city on earth."

After three complete innings the Yarmouth Red Knights lead the Cadogan Nitehawks 3-0 in the championship game of the Over-35 national baseball championships.

The Yarmouth Red Knights' reign as Over 35 national baseball champions is over.
The Red Knights lost in the championship game to the Cadogan Nitehawks 7-6 in Burnaby, B.C.
Yarmouth jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings and was in control of the game. From there the tide turned in favour of the team from Alberta.
“Kind of the wheels fell off," said Rick Clayton of the Red Knights. "We made all kinds of mental mistakes.”
The frustrating thing about baseball is that when mistakes start to come, they tend to come in bunches. Clayton said after the third inning it seemed like nothing could go right for the team.
Cadogan jumped on Yarmouth for five runs to make it 5-3 and, despite their best efforts, Yarmouth could get no closer than 7-6.
“Basically we beat ourselves,” said Clayton. “We were definitely the best team on the field but that’s not always who wins.”
The team travels back to Nova Scotia tomorrow and Clayton said most of the team would be back in Yarmouth by late Tuesdsay evening. _________________ "I'd rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than in any city on earth."
