LARGE OPEN CEDAR OCTAGON GAZEBO
At 16 feet across, this custom Cedar Octagon Gazebo creates a considerably larger and more open gathering space than a traditional backyard gazebo. Delivered as a kit to Bedford, Pennsylvania, in 2026, the structure was customized with oversized 8×8 posts, no floor or bottom railings, a finished cedar ceiling, and a custom semi-transparent stain, giving the classic octagon design a more substantial pavilion-like presence.
The 16-foot octagonal footprint provides a generous covered area suitable for larger dining arrangements, lounge furniture, entertaining, or a combination of seating areas. Removing the traditional bottom railings makes the entire perimeter more accessible and allows guests to enter and exit the structure from nearly any side.
This open character is enhanced further by the gazebo’s floorless design. Instead of incorporating a raised wood deck, the structure was designed to be installed over the customer’s prepared surface. This allows an existing patio, concrete pad, pavers, or another suitable finished surface to continue uninterrupted beneath the gazebo.
One of the most significant upgrades is the support system. Rather than conventional gazebo posts, this structure uses eight nominal 8×8 cedar posts approximately 10 feet tall. Their substantial proportions are appropriately scaled to the 16-foot structure and give the gazebo a much heavier architectural presence.
The entire framework is crafted from appearance-grade Western Cedar, showcasing the natural grain and character of the wood throughout the exposed structure. A custom-color semi-transparent stain was selected to finish the cedar, allowing the homeowner to coordinate the gazebo with the surrounding property while preserving the visible wood grain.
Overhead, the traditional octagonal roof converges toward a standard cupola, creating the recognizable silhouette of a classic gazebo. Straight fascia boards keep the edges of the roof clean and understated, allowing the scale of the structure and natural cedar construction to provide most of the visual interest.
The interior roof received an important upgrade as well. 1×6 cedar ceiling boards were installed along the underside of the rafters, creating a finished wood ceiling when viewed from beneath the gazebo. This additional layer conceals portions of the roof construction and gives the expansive overhead surface a warmer, more refined appearance.
On the exterior, asphalt shingles provide the finished roofing surface and weather protection. The combination of a solid shingle roof and finished cedar ceiling allows the structure to provide dependable shade and shelter while maintaining the open sides that make it ideal for outdoor gatherings.
Although the traditional bottom railings were removed, standard top rails remain incorporated into the design where required, helping preserve elements of the classic octagon gazebo profile without closing off the lower perimeter.
Post mounting brackets were included with the structure for attachment to the customer’s prepared foundation. The custom components were prefabricated and then delivered to Bedford as a gazebo kit for final assembly on-site.
