PRESSURE-TREATED OPEN GABLE PAVILION
Keeping the materials natural and the design straightforward, this custom 14′ x 14′ Pressure-Treated Open Gable Pavilion was built for a property in Columbus, Indiana, in 2026. The pavilion combines an open gable roof, durable pressure-treated lumber, stainless steel hardware, and Virginia Slate shingles to create a practical covered outdoor space without relying on decorative stains or elaborate upgrades.
With a 14′ x 14′ footprint, the pavilion provides approximately 196 square feet of covered space. The square layout offers plenty of room for an outdoor dining set, lounge furniture, or a combination of seating and entertaining space while remaining compact enough to work comfortably within a residential backyard or patio.
The pavilion was constructed from pressure-treated wood, selected for its durability and ability to withstand long-term outdoor exposure. Unlike many of the stained cedar and timber frame structures in our project gallery, this pavilion was intentionally ordered without stain, allowing the natural pressure-treated lumber to remain visible.
Supporting the roof are 5×5 posts, creating an open perimeter around the covered area. The uncomplicated post configuration keeps sightlines clear and allows people to move easily between the pavilion and the surrounding patio, lawn, or landscape.
Above, the open gable design gives the structure a more spacious feeling than a fully enclosed gable end. The exposed roof framing becomes part of the pavilion’s appearance, drawing the eye upward and allowing the natural wood construction to remain visible from beneath the structure.
The roof is finished with Virginia Slate asphalt shingles, introducing a neutral gray tone that pairs naturally with the unfinished pressure-treated lumber. The darker roofing provides a clean finishing contrast while giving the pavilion dependable protection from sun and rain.
Another practical upgrade on this project is the use of stainless steel hardware. In an outdoor structure where fasteners and connections are continually exposed to changing weather conditions, stainless steel provides excellent corrosion resistance while complementing the pavilion’s straightforward, durable construction.
Rather than covering the lumber with paint or stain, the customer chose to keep the pavilion’s appearance simple and natural. Over time, the exposed pressure-treated wood can gradually weather, giving the structure a more established appearance within the surrounding landscape.
The finished pavilion provides a permanent 196-square-foot outdoor gathering area where the focus is on usable covered space rather than extensive ornamentation. Its open gables help maintain an airy atmosphere, while the solid roof makes the area below more comfortable during sunny afternoons and passing rain.
Completed in Columbus in 2026, this project demonstrates how pressure-treated construction, an open gable roof, stainless steel hardware, and a neutral Virginia Slate roof can create an attractive and functional pavilion while keeping the overall design clean, natural, and uncomplicated.
