CEDAR PAVILION WITH PRIVACY WALL
Privacy and covered outdoor living come together in this custom 8′ x 16′ Cedar Holiday Shadow Pavilion, delivered as a DIY kit to Ithaca, New York. With its long rectangular footprint, natural cedar construction, and full-length privacy wall, this pavilion was designed to create a comfortable and more secluded space for relaxing, dining, or entertaining outdoors.
One of the most distinctive elements of the project is the 16-foot privacy wall running along the entire back side of the pavilion. The solid wall helps define the outdoor living area and provides separation from neighboring properties or other areas of the yard. A square lattice design across the top keeps the wall from feeling completely enclosed while adding decorative detail and allowing additional light and airflow into the pavilion.
For the primary structure, the customer selected appearance-grade cedar wood, giving the pavilion the warm grain and natural character associated with cedar construction. A semi-transparent Cedar stain was applied to the wood, enhancing its natural appearance rather than covering it with an opaque finish. The privacy wall was stained as well, creating a coordinated appearance across the entire structure.
Four substantial 5×5 cedar posts support the pavilion, paired with double 2×8 headers spanning the structure. The post bases were changed to a more compact 16-inch design, providing a slightly different finished appearance at the base of each support while maintaining the pavilion’s clean architectural lines.
Above the outdoor living area, 2×6 rafters spaced 24 inches on center form the framework for the low-profile roof. A 2/12 roof pitch gives the Holiday Shadow Pavilion its characteristic streamlined silhouette, making it especially well suited for properties where a taller or steeper pavilion roof may not be desirable.
From underneath, 1×6 tongue-and-groove roof decking creates a finished wood ceiling that remains visible throughout the pavilion. This exposed cedar detailing adds warmth overhead and makes the covered space feel more like a finished outdoor room than a basic shade structure.
Prepared as a DIY cedar pavilion kit, the components were delivered to Ithaca for assembly at the customer’s property. The project also qualified for Atlantic Outdoors’ 5% winter discount, providing additional value across several of the selected options. With its 16-foot privacy wall, decorative square lattice, stained cedar construction, and compact Shadow roofline, the finished design offers a balance of privacy, shade, and natural wood character for a Northeast backyard setting.
