FIVE SAVANNAH WOOD-METAL PAVILIONS
Rather than a single outdoor structure, this 2026 West Point, New York project consisted of five matching 12′ x 12′ Savannah Pavilions, creating a coordinated collection of covered spaces across the property. Each pavilion combines pressure-treated wood with structural metal components and a standing seam roof, resulting in a distinctive hybrid design suited to a larger institutional setting.
Together, the five pavilions provide approximately 720 square feet of covered space, divided among individual 144-square-foot structures. Using multiple smaller pavilions instead of one large shelter creates separate gathering areas while maintaining a consistent architectural style throughout the site.
One of the defining characteristics of the Savannah design is its combination of wood and metal construction. Each pavilion is supported by four metal posts, giving the lower portion of the structure a clean, streamlined appearance. Above the posts, pressure-treated glulam rafters transition the structure into a warmer natural-wood roof system.
The upper portions of the pavilions were constructed from appearance-grade pressure-treated wood and finished with a semi-transparent clear stain. Rather than dramatically changing the color of the lumber, the clear finish allows the grain and natural variation of the wood to remain visible, providing an attractive contrast against the metal supports and roofing.
From beneath each structure, 2× tongue-and-groove roof decking creates a finished wood ceiling. The exposed decking makes the natural wood an important part of the pavilion experience, adding warmth overhead while maintaining the durability needed for an exterior installation.
Each pavilion features a relatively low-profile 3/12 roof pitch, giving the Savannah design a clean and understated silhouette. The roofs are finished with standing seam metal, providing a durable exterior surface while reinforcing the more contemporary character introduced by the metal support posts.
The structures were intentionally designed without cupolas, keeping the rooflines simple and allowing the combination of metal roofing and exposed wood to define the appearance. They were also supplied without floors or post bases, as the site was prepared specifically for permanent installation.
Foundation preparation was coordinated separately, with the customer responsible for preparing the required footers before installation. Once the sites were ready, Atlantic Outdoors delivered the five structures to West Point and professionally installed them on the prepared foundations.
Because this was an institutional installation, the project also required prevailing wages to be paid to all workers performing labor on-site. This requirement was incorporated into the overall installation scope and distinguishes the project from a typical residential pavilion delivery.
Installed as a coordinated group, these five Savannah Pavilions demonstrate how a repeated structure can help create a unified outdoor environment across a larger property. The combination of metal posts, exposed pressure-treated wood, tongue-and-groove ceilings, and standing seam roofing gives the collection a consistent architectural identity while providing multiple individual spaces for shade, gathering, and everyday outdoor use.
