ATTACHED CEDAR PERGOLA WITH CANOPY
Designed to extend the home’s living space directly into the backyard, this custom 8′ x 20′ Cedar Pergola Kit was delivered to Conway, South Carolina, in 2025. Rather than using a traditional four-post freestanding layout, the pergola was engineered to attach directly to the house along its 20-foot side, creating a natural transition between the home and the covered outdoor area.
The house-attached configuration allows the pergola to maintain an open and spacious appearance with only two 7×7 cedar posts supporting the outside edge. Each post was supplied at 10 feet tall so it could be cut to the appropriate finished height on-site after the ledger board was properly positioned and mounted to the house. Heavy-duty post brackets and dedicated mounting brackets were incorporated for additional strength at the two support locations.
Because of the pergola’s wide 20-foot span, substantial structural components were incorporated into the design. A double 2×12 header supports the freestanding side of the structure, while double 2×6 return beams frame the two ends. Corner braces reinforce these connections while also adding traditional timber-style detailing to the finished pergola.
Overhead, 2×6 runners with decorative ends establish the pergola’s primary roof pattern. Smaller 2×2 top runnerscross above them, creating the layered appearance characteristic of a traditional wood pergola. The exposed members allow the natural cedar construction to remain a prominent part of the design when viewed both from the yard and from beneath the structure.
To make the space more usable during sunny South Carolina days, the project also included a custom 8′ x 20′ canopysized specifically for the pergola. The canopy adds functional shade to the otherwise open roof design, allowing the homeowner to enjoy the architectural character of a pergola while gaining greater protection from direct sunlight.
All exposed cedar wood materials received a semi-transparent stain, which enhances the natural grain and variation of the cedar rather than concealing it. 16-inch cedar post bases provide a substantial finished appearance at the bottom of the two support posts and complement the heavier beams and headers used throughout the structure.
Since this pergola attaches directly to the residence, stamped drawings were included with the project to assist with local permitting and structural review. Final structural requirements can vary by municipality, so beam, rafter, or connection specifications may require adjustment when dictated by local building officials.
