THREE-TIER WHITE CEDAR PERGOLA
Stretching nearly 32 feet across the customer’s outdoor space, this custom 10’10” x 31’9″ Three-Tier Cedar Pergola Kit was designed to make a much larger architectural statement than a conventional single-section pergola. Delivered to Melbourne, Florida, in 2026, the structure combines three distinct pergola tiers with substantial Western Red Cedar framing and a crisp white painted finish.
The three-tier configuration is the defining feature of the project. Instead of carrying one continuous roofline across the entire 31’9″ length, the pergola uses changing elevations to break up its long profile and create additional dimension. The stepped design helps visually divide the structure into separate outdoor zones while allowing all three sections to function as one cohesive outdoor living area.
Beneath the tiered framework, 7×7 cedar posts provide substantial support and give the long pergola an appropriately heavy architectural presence. The outside posts maintain approximately 9 feet of header clearance, creating tall, open passages around the perimeter and helping the structure feel spacious despite the amount of overhead framing.
The pergola was handcrafted from appearance-grade Western Red Cedar, but this project takes a different approach to the finished appearance of the wood. Rather than using a transparent or semi-transparent cedar stain, the structure received white paint over the cedar materials, creating a bright exterior while retaining the strength and craftsmanship of a traditional wood pergola underneath.
Because opaque paint behaves differently on exterior cedar than penetrating wood stains, the white painted finish does not carry a finish warranty. This was an important project-specific consideration, particularly in Florida’s combination of strong sunlight, heat, humidity, and frequent moisture exposure.
Structurally, double 2×8 headers with corner braces form the primary sides of the pergola. Along the remaining sides, double 2×6 return beams and additional corner braces tie the framework together, creating substantial connections that complement the oversized posts.
Across the three roof levels, 2×6 runners with decorative ends establish the pergola’s traditional open-roof profile. A second layer of 2×2 top runners adds depth overhead, creating the repeating pattern of beams and filtered sunlight associated with a classic cedar pergola while following the project’s distinctive tiered elevations.
Each post is finished with a 16-inch cedar post base, adding visual weight at ground level and providing a more substantial transition between the vertical posts and the customer’s prepared surface.
For this particular project, heavy-duty mounting brackets, anchor brackets, and anchoring hardware were not included with the pergola package. The customer elected to supply the required brackets and hardware separately based on the conditions and requirements of the installation site.
Prepared as a prefabricated cedar pergola kit, the custom components were fabricated for the nearly 32-foot layout and delivered to Melbourne for final assembly. The combination of its exceptional length, three changing roof elevations, oversized 7×7 posts, decorative runners, and white-painted cedar makes this one of the more architecturally distinctive pergola designs in the Atlantic Outdoors project gallery.
