WALNUT-STAINED CEDAR PERGOLA KIT
Custom sizing allowed this Western Red Cedar Pergola to be tailored specifically to its Saratoga, California, setting. Measuring approximately 13’9″ x 13’5″ from the outside of the posts, the structure falls between common standard pergola sizes, creating a generous outdoor living area while fitting the dimensions of the customer’s prepared space.
The rich Walnut stain is one of the defining elements of the design. Applied across the entire cedar structure, the darker finish gives the pergola a more dramatic appearance while still allowing the grain and natural variation of the Western Red Cedar to remain part of its character. The result is a warm wood structure that can provide an attractive contrast against lighter patios, stonework, landscaping, and surrounding architecture.
Four substantial 5×5 cedar posts establish the corners of the pergola. Each post was designed for installation using anchors and L brackets, with 16-inch cedar post bases adding visual weight at ground level and creating a more finished transition between the posts and the surface below.
Rather than using lightweight perimeter framing, the design incorporates double 2×8 headers along two sides. Corner braces reinforce the connections while adding traditional timber-style detailing beneath the overhead framework. On the remaining sides, double 2×6 return beams with corner braces complete the rectangular frame and tie the four posts together visually.
Overhead, heavier 2×8 rafters span the pergola and terminate in decorative ends, creating one of the structure’s most visible architectural details. The larger rafters give the custom pergola a substantial appearance while maintaining the open-roof design that distinguishes a pergola from a solid-roof pavilion.
A second layer of 2×2 top runners crosses above the rafters, creating additional depth and the familiar grid pattern of a traditional wood pergola. As sunlight passes through the two layers, the structure produces changing areas of light and shade across the outdoor living space below.
Because the roof remains open, the pergola defines the area without completely separating it from the surrounding California landscape. Its nearly square proportions provide plenty of room for a dining set, lounge furniture, or an outdoor conversation area while preserving airflow and an open view overhead.
The custom structure was prepared as a DIY cedar pergola kit and delivered to Saratoga with the necessary mounting brackets and hardware for installation. Prefabricating the individual components allowed the pergola to be built specifically for the required dimensions while still being assembled at the customer’s property.
