Designed around an unconventional three-sided footprint, this custom 13′ x 13′ x 18′ Triangle Cedar Pergola was delivered to Stevens, Pennsylvania, in 2026. The structure combines the warmth of Western Red Cedar with substantial headers, layered overhead runners, decorative bracing, and 36-inch post bases, creating a pergola specifically suited to an angled patio, landscape corner, or other space where a traditional rectangular design may not be the best fit.
The pergola’s 13′ x 13′ x 18′ triangular configuration immediately sets it apart. Its long 18-foot side creates a generous span across the outdoor living area, while the two matching 13-foot sides converge to form the distinctive three-sided layout. This geometry can help define an otherwise challenging portion of a patio while turning the unusual shape into an intentional architectural feature.
Appearance-grade Western Red Cedar was selected for the structure, giving the pergola the natural grain and character associated with exposed cedar construction. A semi-transparent stain was applied to the wood, enriching its appearance while allowing the variation and texture of the cedar to remain visible.
The primary framework incorporates double 2×6 headers with double corner braces, creating substantial connections around the triangular perimeter. The additional bracing also introduces decorative detail beneath the overhead framework and visually reinforces each corner of the structure.
Above the headers, 2×6 runners with decorative ends follow the custom shape of the pergola. A second layer of 2×4 top runners adds depth overhead, producing the repeating pattern of wood and filtered sunlight that gives an open-roof pergola its distinctive character.
Top header plates provide another structural layer within the design, helping tie the unusual three-sided framework together. Because the beams follow angles rather than the right-angle intersections found on a conventional pergola, the exposed joinery becomes an especially noticeable part of the finished structure.
Supporting the framework are 5×5 cedar posts. Each post is finished with an oversized 36-inch decorative post base, extending farther up the support than a standard base treatment. These tall bases visually anchor the pergola and give the lower portion of the structure additional architectural weight.
Despite the amount of overhead detail, the pergola remains completely open to the surrounding landscape. Sunlight filters between the runners throughout the day, creating changing patterns of light and shadow while maintaining the airflow and open-sky feeling that distinguishes a pergola from a solid-roof pavilion.
Mounting brackets were included with the structure to assist with securing the posts to the customer’s properly prepared installation surface. The custom components were fabricated in advance and delivered directly to the Stevens property as a DIY pergola kit for final assembly.
