Description

What to Expect from Timber Frame Structures

Timber frame structures bring unmatched strength, beauty, and character to any outdoor space. When working with large, natural timbers certain characteristics are not only normal but expected. These features highlight the authenticity and craftsmanship of true timber framing.

Natural Wood Characteristics (Timber Frames)

Wood is a living, breathing material. As heavy timbers dry over time, they naturally develop:

  • Splits, shakes, and checking — Common in all large timbers and rarely impact structural integrity.
  • Visible sap — All wood contains sap, and changes in temperature or humidity may cause sap to appear on cut surfaces. Covering outdoor furniture is recommended until sap emissions subside.
  • Bark or wane edges — Especially typical on large, hand-selected beams.
  • High initial moisture content — Large “green” timbers take time to settle and season. We recommend allowing the wood to weather for up to a year before staining for best results.

These organic variations are part of the timber frame experience—natural, rustic, and meant to be enjoyed.

Built-On-Site Installation Requirements (Smaller Units)

If your timber frame structure includes on-site construction, here’s what to expect:

  • Installed on your prepared concrete piers/footers
  • Footers must be completed 3 weeks prior to installation
  • Extended Reach Forklift access required (gable end + both sides)
Special Notes for Paver or Concrete Patios
  • If installing pavers, they must be added after the pavilion is built.
  • Concrete pier tops must be fully visible upon crew arrival.
  • Standoff Brackets are required if concrete will be poured after installation or if pavers will raise the final surface grade.
Concrete Damage Waiver (Small Units)

If your patio surface is concrete poured before installation, the customer is responsible for any cosmetic or structural damage caused by heavy equipment, including tire marks, cracks, or surface imperfections.

Built-On-Site Installation Requirements (Larger Units)

For larger timber frame structures, installation requires:

  • Prepared concrete piers/footers, installed 3 weeks before the build
  • Onsite access for:
  • Extended Reach Forklift
  • Scissor Lift
  • Crane (as needed)

Access is required to one gable and both sides.

Patio Surface Requirements (Larger Units)
  • Pavers must be installed after the pavilion is completed
  • Concrete pier tops must remain visible at time of installation
  • Standoff Brackets required if concrete is poured following the pavilion installation
Concrete Damage Waiver (Large Units)

Any damage to pre-poured concrete—such as cracking, surface marks, or breaks—caused by equipment is the customer’s responsibility. Heavy machinery may create unavoidable wear during installation.
